I first came across Padraig O’Morain when I bought his book Daily Calm. I was so impressed with his way of integrating mindfulness into your life, and building up a regular mindfulness habit, that I subscribed online to his daily mindfulness email The Daily Bell.
The Daily Bell is a sort of ‘thought of the day’ – that Padraig sends out to his 15,000 subscribers every morning, and has done so for the last 5 years. It’s usually the first thing I look at every morning and is great way to start the day.
Padraig O’Morain has practised mindfulness since the late 1980s, having taught mindfulness throughout Ireland and in London, demonstrating mindfulness on ITV, RTE and TV3 and has published books on mindfulness in several countries and several languages. He says his aim is to make mindfulness easily accessible to people in their everyday lives.
He has published several books on the subject and runs regular online courses.
When Padraig began to practise mindfulness, not many people had heard of it in the West. At that time people were expected to do long meditations every day which didn’t always fit in with the pace of life. Instead Padraig prefers to use simple mindfulness approaches to help him be mindful during the day and get the the full benefits of this practice.
Padraig says on his website “I began to practice mindfulness on a sunny Dublin afternoon in the 1980s. During my lunch break I had bought a book on meditation and I had read two paragraphs on mindfulness.
“I tried it out and I liked how I felt. Later that afternoon, I abandoned my desk in The Irish Times – not an unusual event – and went for a stroll in the grounds of Trinity College. I felt wonderful as I practiced my mindfulness. I was filled with the deepest sense of peace and happiness I had ever known. I have never forgotten the experience.”
